McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh
The Bougainvillea
In the middle of McLeodganj
McLeodganj is a town that earns its reputation. It’s lively in a way that most Himachal Pradesh towns aren’t — the Tibetan market, the Tsuglagkhang monastery complex, the cafes that fill with travellers staying longer than planned. The Bougainvillea is set within it: a property that puts you close to everything without the noise following you inside.
Named for the flowering vine that covers its facade — the blooms are hard to miss in season — the property has an ease to it. The rooms are well-proportioned, the bathrooms attached and properly finished, and the terrace has the kind of view of the surrounding hills that you’ll want to sit in front of with a coffee in the morning and a book in the afternoon.
What a stay here feels like
You wake up to the hills on the horizon and, depending on the breeze, the distant sound of monastery bells. The terrace is the right place for the first hour of the morning — coffee in hand, the town not yet fully awake. By the time you’ve had breakfast, the day has a dozen directions it could go.
Walk ten minutes and you’re at the Tsuglagkhang — the main temple complex and one of the most visited monasteries in India outside Varanasi. Walk in the other direction and you’re in the Tibetan market, where the morning produce stalls give way to handicraft shops that take a few visits to properly explore. The café strip is in between, which is why guests lose track of time in it.
The nine rooms at The Bougainvillea all have private balconies and hill views. They’re quiet in the way a well-placed property manages to be, even when the town is busy outside. The kind of stay where you come back in the evening and realise the day went better than planned.
Who comes here
McLeodganj draws guests who come for the culture and stay for the town’s particular pace — a rhythm that’s hard to find elsewhere in Himachal.
The Tsuglagkhang, the Namgyal monastery, the Tibet Museum, the Tibetan market — McLeodganj is one of the most culturally rich towns in the Indian mountains. Guests who want more than scenery come here.
The Triund trail starts within reach of town — a day trek with some of the most dramatic Dhauladhar views in the region. The Bougainvillea makes a comfortable base before and after a long day on the trail.
A town with character, a property with a terrace and good rooms, hill views from every balcony. McLeodganj rewards slow travel, and The Bougainvillea is set up for it.
McLeodganj has been a destination for extended stays since the 1970s. The cafes, the libraries, the town’s easy rhythm — guests regularly book three nights and extend to a week or more.
Safe, walkable, sociable without being chaotic. McLeodganj is one of the friendliest towns in Himachal Pradesh for solo travel. The Bougainvillea puts you in the middle of it.
McLeodganj is accessible from Delhi in an overnight bus or a short flight to Kangra. It’s a good first look at the mountains — enough altitude and landscape, but with a town that handles first-timers well.
Probably not the right fit if you’re looking for
- Deep forest solitude — this is a busy hill town with a permanent traveller community
- Complete quiet — McLeodganj has a natural hum, especially in peak season
- Resort-style amenities — spa, pool, full room service
- A remote, off-the-map location — McLeodganj is well-connected and well-known
If you want forest solitude and the retreat experience, our Birdhouse Retreat in Dharamkot — a short drive above McLeodganj — is the quieter option. But if you want McLeodganj, this is where to be.
The Rooms
Nine rooms across three categories. All rooms have private balconies with views of the surrounding hills — the difference between categories is mostly in space and balcony size.

Deluxe Room
The most spacious option at The Bougainvillea — a generous double room with a large private balcony and a proper view. The Deluxe comes with a TV and hairdryer in addition to the standard amenities, and the extra balcony space makes it worth stepping up to if you’re staying more than a couple of nights.
Superior Room
A well-proportioned double room with a private balcony overlooking the McLeodganj hills. Quiet, clean, and comfortable — the kind of room you stop noticing after the first hour because everything just works. The balcony is where you’ll actually spend your mornings.

Superior Corner Room
The same room as the Superior, with a larger wrap-around corner balcony. If you’re the kind of guest who takes breakfast outside, reads in the afternoon sun, and watches the light change over the hills in the evening — book the corner. Two sides of view, twice the reason to stay on the balcony.
What guests say
“The balcony sold us. We booked the corner room and spent most of our time outside watching the hills change in the light. Tsuglagkhang is a fifteen-minute walk. Perfect base for a week in McLeodganj.”
“We stayed four nights and would have stayed longer. The property is comfortable and quiet despite being so central. Breakfast on the terrace, the monastery in the morning, the market in the afternoon. Hard to beat.”
“Clean, well-finished rooms and genuinely helpful staff who knew where to eat and what to see. The bougainvillea on the facade is exactly as nice as the photos suggest. Will definitely be back.”

McLeodganj
McLeodganj, or “Little Lhasa” as it’s known, carries the weight of the Tibetan exile community alongside the business of a busy hill station. The Dalai Lama’s residence is here; so is the Tsuglagkhang — one of the most visited monasteries in India outside Varanasi. The town has a market that mixes Tibetan handicrafts with mountain gear, and a café scene that’s been drawing long-stay travellers for decades. From The Bougainvillea, you’re within walking distance of most of it. The forest trails above town and the Triund route are a short taxi ride away when you’re ready for something quieter.

Questions guests ask
How far is The Bougainvillea from the Tsuglagkhang monastery?
The Tsuglagkhang complex — the main temple associated with the Dalai Lama — is roughly a 10–15 minute walk from the property. The Tibetan market and the main café strip are along the same route, so you’ll pass through the heart of McLeodganj on the way.
Is it possible to do the Triund trek from The Bougainvillea?
Yes. The Triund trail is one of the most popular day hikes in the region — a 9 km trek up to a ridge with dramatic views of the Dhauladhar range. The trailhead at Galu Devi temple is about 20–25 minutes from McLeodganj by taxi. Most guests do it as an early-start day trip. If you’d like trail conditions or guide recommendations, ask us when you arrive.
What’s the best time of year to visit McLeodganj?
March through June and September through November are the clearest months — good weather, good visibility, and the town at its most active. July and August bring heavy monsoon rains; McLeodganj stays open but trekking is difficult and the trails can be slippery. December through February is cold, quiet, and atmospheric — the town is considerably calmer and some cafes close for the season.
What’s the difference between McLeodganj and Dharamsala?
Dharamsala is the lower town — primarily administrative, with markets and transport hubs. McLeodganj is the upper town, about 500m higher in altitude, and is where most travellers stay. The Tibetan exile community is concentrated in McLeodganj, which is why it has the monastery, the Tibetan market, and the café scene. The two are connected by a 20–25 minute taxi ride or a steep uphill walk.
Is McLeodganj good for solo travel?
Yes — McLeodganj is one of the most solo-travel-friendly destinations in the Indian mountains. The town is compact and walkable, the café culture makes it easy to meet other travellers, and English is widely spoken. Solo guests at The Bougainvillea regularly extend their stays once they settle into the town’s rhythm.
How do I get from Delhi to McLeodganj?
The most convenient option is to fly into Kangra (Gaggal) airport, which has regular flights from Delhi, and then take a 90-minute taxi to McLeodganj. An overnight Volvo bus from Delhi is the budget option — roughly 12 hours and significantly cheaper. From Pathankot (the nearest major railway station), a 3-hour taxi ride brings you into town.
