Dharamkot
The forest village above McLeodganj
A village that earns its quiet
Dharamkot sits above McLeodganj at around 1,457 metres — a short climb through the deodar and cedar forest that takes you out of the town and into something noticeably different. The lanes are narrower up here, the crowds thinner, the pace slower. It’s a village in the way that McLeodganj used to be before it became a destination: small, walkable, with most things you need within a few minutes on foot and the mountains close enough to feel like they belong to you.
The village has been a centre for yoga and meditation since the 1980s. The Tushita Meditation Centre, one of the most respected Buddhist study centres in India, is here. So is the Dharamkot Studio, which runs some of the best yoga classes in Himachal Pradesh. The combination of forest setting, altitude, and a concentrated community of practitioners has made Dharamkot the place people come when they want to do a serious practice rather than just a drop-in class. Courses fill weeks in advance. People extend their stays by the week, not by the day.
For trekkers, Dharamkot is the starting point for two of the most rewarding routes in the Dhauladhar range. The Triund trail begins just above the village — a 3 to 4 hour ascent through forest and open grassland to a ridge that gives you an unobstructed 180-degree view of the mountains. Kareri Lake, a full two-day trek through remote terrain, is accessible from here too. The trailheads are within walking distance of both our properties.
McLeodganj — with its monasteries, Tibetan market, and café strip — is a 15 to 20 minute walk downhill, or five minutes by taxi. Dharamkot gives you the forest and the quiet with the town available when you want it. Most guests who stay here for more than two or three nights stop using the taxi.
What brings people to Dharamkot
Trekking
The Triund trail starts just above the village. A 9km ascent through the Dhauladhar forest to a ridge at 2,850m — one of the most accessible high-altitude views in India. Kareri Lake (3,050m) is a two-day trek for those who want something more demanding.
Yoga and meditation
The Tushita Meditation Centre runs 10-day Introduction to Buddhism courses that book out months in advance. The Dharamkot Studio runs daily Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Yin classes. Several independent teachers offer private sessions and multi-week programmes.
Long stays
Dharamkot has a tradition of extended stays going back decades. People arrive for a week and stay for a month. The village has enough — cafés, bakeries, a small market, studios — to support a long stay comfortably without feeling isolated.

Best time to visit
March – June
Spring is the best season. The Himalayan cherry blossom blooms in March. Triund is clear and the days are warm. Peak crowd in May.
July – August
Monsoon. Heavy rain, leeches on the trails, misty but lush. Not ideal for trekking but the forest is beautiful. Some guests love this season.
September – November
Post-monsoon is spectacular. Crystal skies, the mountains sharply defined, trails dry and uncrowded. Arguably the best month is October.
December – February
Cold and often snowy above 2,000m. Dharamkot itself may see light snowfall. The village is quiet, prices low, and the light on clear days is extraordinary.
Questions about Dharamkot
How far is Dharamkot from McLeodganj?
About 1.5–2km uphill, which takes 15–20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi. Most guests walk down to McLeodganj and take a taxi back up — it’s a steep climb. After a few days you’ll build the habit and stop bothering with taxis entirely.
Is Dharamkot good for first-time Himachal visitors?
Yes — it’s accessible (good road, reliable taxis, well-connected by bus from Delhi and Chandigarh) while still giving you the mountain experience. The altitude is moderate (around 1,457m), so acclimatisation isn’t an issue. And having McLeodganj nearby means you’re never far from restaurants, ATMs, or a pharmacy.
Do I need prior trekking experience for Triund?
Triund is manageable for most reasonably fit people without prior trekking experience. It’s a sustained uphill walk of about 9km, not a technical climb. Proper footwear and an early start (to avoid afternoon heat or sudden weather changes) are the main requirements. The trail is well-marked and you’ll have company most of the way.
How do I book a Tushita course or Dharamkot Studio class?
Both book independently of accommodation. Tushita courses (tushita.info) fill up months in advance — check their schedule and apply early. Dharamkot Studio runs daily drop-in classes as well as multi-day programmes. We can share current class schedules when you contact us to book your stay.
What’s the difference between the two Dharamkot properties?
The Birdhouse Retreat is our older, more secluded property — 5 rooms in the cedar forest above the village. Quieter, more in the trees, better for guests who want to step away from things entirely. Little Bird Homes is in the village itself — 7 rooms, 6 with kitchenettes, a garden with oak trees and a cherry blossom. Better for longer stays, self-catering, and guests who want to be in the middle of things. Both are a 5-minute walk apart.
