The Birdhouse Villa Bir

A villa in the Bir valley

Bir is an easy town to underestimate. It shows up on itineraries as a paragliding stop — the launch site at Billing, 14 km up the hill, has hosted world championships — but the valley itself is quieter and more layered than that. Tibetan settlements, tea gardens, monasteries, a cycling circuit that most people don’t know about. The Birdhouse Villa Bir sits right in the heart of this valley: a well-run property with eight rooms, a garden, and a view of the hills that doesn’t require any effort to access.

The ground floor has its own character — a cosy library, a café space, garden and parking outside. The eight rooms upstairs are well-appointed and considered. It’s the kind of property that works equally well for a solo traveller and a group of four, a paraglider on a training week and a family from Delhi on a long weekend.

What a stay here feels like

Step outside the front door and you’re on Bir’s main square — monks crossing to the monastery, paragliders comparing notes over chai, the smell of something good from the café down the lane. Villa Bir sits at the centre of it all, which is either the point or the reason to look elsewhere, depending on what you’re after.

The property’s ground floor runs at its own rhythm. The library is a good place to disappear into in the afternoon. The café space is where guests tend to linger over breakfast longer than they planned. The garden is quieter than the square — a proper retreat when you want it. Parking is out front, which matters more than it sounds in a Himachal hill town.

Upstairs, eight rooms. All well-finished, all quiet in the way a well-built property manages to be even when there’s a town outside. The kind of stay where you wake up, head downstairs for breakfast, and find yourself still there an hour later planning the rest of your trip.

Who comes here

Villa Bir draws guests who want to be somewhere specific — in a valley, in a culture, in a town that rewards attention.

Paragliders

Billing is 14 km up the hill — one of the best paragliding sites in Asia. Villa Bir is where serious pilots and first-timers alike come to base themselves for a week or a season.

Weekend trippers

Delhi and Chandigarh are 6–7 hours by road. Bir is the kind of destination that earns a long weekend: the drive in, the valley, the food, the pace.

Couples

A valley you haven’t seen before. A property with a garden and good rooms. A town that has enough to keep you interested without being exhausting.

Families

Parking, ground floor common spaces, rooms that can accommodate a group — Villa Bir handles families well. A base for the valley without the logistics headache.

Slow travellers

The Tibetan settlement here is one of the largest in India outside Dharamsala — monasteries, a market, cycling through the tea gardens. The kind of place that opens up over three or four days.

First-time Himachal visitors

Accessible, well-connected, at the centre of Bir town. A straightforward base from which to figure out what Himachal actually is before you commit to the more remote options.

Probably not the right fit if you’re looking for

  • Deep forest solitude or a property away from people (this is a town-centre location)
  • Complete silence — the main square has a natural hum to it
  • A dedicated remote work setup with conference facilities
  • Luxury resort amenities — spa, pool, room service

If you’re looking for the mountain-forest version, our Retreat in Dharamkot is the other side of that. But if you want to be in Bir — this is the place.

The Rooms

Eight rooms across four categories. All rooms have private bathrooms, hot water, and free Wi-Fi. Room types differ in size and balcony access.

King Room

The largest room at the villa — a generous king-size bed, enough floor space to not feel crowded, and a private balcony that looks out over the garden and the hills. Suited to couples, or anyone who wants to spread out properly after a long journey.

Deluxe Double Room

A well-finished double room — one of the most popular at the villa. Bright, properly furnished, and quiet. Works as well for a long weekend away from the city as it does for a longer stay in the valley. Private balcony with garden views.

Superior Double Room

A double room with a private balcony and a view of the garden. Good for guests who want a bit more space to settle into without stepping up to a King. Well-proportioned and quietly comfortable — the garden is a few steps from your door.

Standard Double Room

A clean, straightforward double room — good value for guests who are here primarily to be in Bir rather than in their room. The garden and common areas are a few steps away when you want more space. Everything you need, nothing excessive.

“The valley is beautiful and the property is exactly right for it. Quiet rooms despite being on the main square. The library downstairs is a lovely touch — I got through two books I’d been carrying around for months.”

The Birdhouse Villa, Bir
A gorgeous villa located conveniently in the heart of Bir town

Bir, Himachal Pradesh

Bir sits in the Kangra valley at around 1,400m — high enough to be cool in summer, low enough to be accessible year-round. The paragliding at nearby Billing is the most visible draw, but Bir’s Tibetan settlement (one of the largest in India outside Dharamsala) gives the town a texture that rewards slower travel. There are monasteries, a market, a handful of excellent cafes, and a cycling loop through the tea gardens and villages that most visitors don’t find until their second trip.

Getting here

  • Nearest airport: Kangra (Gaggal) — approx. 1 hr
  • Nearest railway station: Ahju (Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge) — approx. 20 mins
  • From Dharamsala / McLeodganj: approx. 1.5–2 hrs by taxi
  • From Delhi: approx. 9–10 hrs by road; or fly to Kangra and drive 1 hr

Questions guests ask

How far is Billing paragliding site from Villa Bir?

Billing — the main paragliding launch site — is about 14 km from Bir town, roughly a 30–40 minute drive up the hill. Most paragliding operators in Bir run their own transport to and from the launch site. If you need a recommendation for a reliable operator, ask us when you arrive.

Is there parking at Villa Bir?

Yes — there’s dedicated parking at the property, which is a genuine rarity in Himachal hill towns. If you’re driving from Delhi or Chandigarh, you won’t need to worry about where to leave the car.

What’s the best time of year to visit Bir?

March through June and September through November are ideal. The weather is clear, the valley is green, and paragliding conditions are at their best. July and August bring the monsoon — Bir stays accessible but the flying stops and visibility can be limited. December through February is cold but quiet, good for those who don’t mind the chill.

Do I need to be experienced to go paragliding at Billing?

No. Billing runs everything from tandem flights for complete beginners to advanced courses for licensed pilots. Most operators in Bir offer tandem experiences that don’t require any training — you fly with an instructor who handles everything. If you want to learn to fly solo, there are week-long courses available. Ask us for operator recommendations.

How far is Villa Bir from Dharamsala and McLeodganj?

Bir is about 1.5–2 hours from Dharamsala and McLeodganj by taxi. Many guests combine a few nights in Bir with time at our Dharamkot or McLeodganj properties — write to us if you want help planning a multi-property trip.

Is Villa Bir suitable for families with children?

Yes. The property has parking, a garden, and ground-floor common spaces that give families more room to spread out. The town is walkable and safe, and Bir’s monasteries and market are genuinely interesting for older children. If you’re travelling as a group, get in touch and we’ll help you sort out the right rooms.
