The Monal
A proper hotel in the heart of McLeodganj
The Monal is the largest of the Birdhouse properties — twelve rooms across a building that you can actually get to by car, with parking on site. For travellers arriving by road, or anyone travelling with more luggage than a backpack, that’s not a small thing in McLeodganj. The lanes in this town are narrow. Having a vehicle and somewhere to put it makes the stay easier from the moment you arrive.
The building has a restaurant on the top floor — good for breakfast, good for dinner after a long day on the trails — and a terrace just below it with an unobstructed view of the Dhauladhar range. The rooms are spacious, all with private balconies, and have the kind of settled, cosy quality that comes from a building with some history to it. They’re not the most contemporary rooms you’ll find. They are comfortable and they have a view.
What a stay here feels like
Breakfast in the rooftop restaurant with the Dhauladhar range catching the morning light. A room large enough to actually unpack into. Your own balcony for the part of the day when you’re not walking the town. The terrace in the evening, when the mountains go pink and the town gets quieter below.
McLeodganj is a town that rewards time spent in it. The Tsuglagkhang is a walk away. The Tibetan market, the cafés, the monastery circuit — all within reach on foot. The Monal puts you close to the middle of it while giving you a room that’s large enough to return to at the end of the day without feeling like you’re in a transit stop.
A note on the rooms: they have character and they have views, but they’re not newly renovated. If you’re after contemporary interiors, look at The Bougainvillea. If you want more space, a proper restaurant upstairs, a parking spot, and a mountain view from your balcony — The Monal is worth it.
Who comes here
The Monal works well for guests who want more than a room — a restaurant to come back to, a terrace with views, space to spread out, and a place to park.
Getting to McLeodganj by car is straightforward; finding parking once you arrive is not. The Monal has its own parking — a real differentiator for anyone travelling by road, especially families and groups with luggage.
Spacious rooms, a family suite option, a restaurant on-site, parking — the practical considerations for family travel are handled here. McLeodganj is an easy destination for families with older children.
Twelve rooms, a restaurant, a terrace large enough to gather on — The Monal works for groups in a way that a small guesthouse can’t. Coordinating meals and logistics is easier when you don’t have to leave the building for dinner.
Not everyone wants to plan every meal around McLeodganj’s café strip. Having a restaurant in the building — open for breakfast and dinner — makes the stay easier, particularly on days when you’ve been walking since morning.
Guests who know McLeodganj and want the view, the space, and the rooftop rather than a more compact property. The Monal is for people who have priorities and know what they are.
All rooms have private balconies. The terrace below the restaurant has one of the best unobstructed views of the Dhauladhar range you’ll find from a McLeodganj property. On a clear day it is genuinely hard to leave.
Probably not the right fit if you’re looking for
- Newly renovated contemporary interiors — rooms are spacious and cosy but not recently updated
- Forest solitude — this is central McLeodganj, not Dharamkot
- A boutique guesthouse feel — The Monal is larger and more hotel-like than our other properties
For a more boutique McLeodganj experience with newer rooms, The Bougainvillea is a short walk away. For forest solitude, The Birdhouse Retreat in Dharamkot is fifteen minutes uphill.
The Rooms
Twelve rooms across four categories. All rooms have private balconies. Mountain view rooms face the Dhauladhar range directly; balcony rooms have views of the surrounding area.
King Room with Mountain View
A spacious king-bedded room with a direct view of the Dhauladhar range and a private balcony to sit in front of it. Four rooms of this type — the most popular category at The Monal, and the one that makes the Dhauladhar view part of the stay rather than something you glimpse from a corridor.
Deluxe Double Room with Balcony
A well-proportioned double room with a private balcony overlooking the surrounding area. Four rooms, all comfortable and cosy in the way that a room with some character tends to be. A good choice for couples or solo travellers who want a solid double and their own outdoor space.
Quadruple Room with Mountain View
A single large room that sleeps four, with a direct mountain view and a private balcony. One room of this type — right for a family of four or a small group who want to stay together without booking two separate rooms. The Dhauladhar view is the same as the King room.
Deluxe Family Suite
The largest option at The Monal — three interconnected rooms forming a private suite. Two double rooms with mountain views and one double room with a balcony, all connected. Right for larger families, multi-generational groups, or two couples travelling together who want their own space but access to a shared living area.
What guests say
“The terrace view of the Dhauladhars is the best we’ve found in McLeodganj. Had breakfast up there every morning. Rooms are spacious and the parking made the whole trip less stressful.”
“We came as a family of five and the suite worked perfectly. Good sized rooms, a restaurant for breakfast, and our car safely parked downstairs. Would come back without question.”
“Rooms have character and the view from the balcony makes up for everything. The rooftop restaurant is excellent — stayed four nights and ate there every evening.”
McLeodganj — Little Lhasa in the mountains
McLeodganj is one of the most layered towns in the Indian mountains — the Dalai Lama’s residence, one of the most visited monastery complexes in the country, a Tibetan market that mixes handicrafts with mountain gear, and a café culture that’s been drawing long-stay travellers for decades. From The Monal, the Tsuglagkhang is a walk. The Triund trail is a taxi ride to the trailhead.
- Tsuglagkhang — the main temple complex, walking distance
- Tibetan market and some of the best momos in the mountains
- Triund trek — day hike with Dhauladhar ridge views
- Namgyal monastery and the Tibet Museum
- Dharamkot — the quieter village above town, 15 minutes uphill
- Kangra airport — approx. 1.5 hrs; Bir — approx. 2 hrs
We also have The Bougainvillea in McLeodganj — a more boutique property with newer rooms for those who want that. Planning a multi-stop Himachal trip? We have properties in Dharamkot and Bir too.
McLeodganj
The Monal is accessible by road with its own parking — a genuine rarity in McLeodganj where most properties are pedestrian-access only. The main bazar and Tsuglagkhang are walkable from the property.

Questions guests ask
Is there really parking at The Monal?
Yes — the property has its own parking and is accessible by road. When you contact us to book, we’ll share the precise location and directions for driving in. This is one of the things that makes The Monal different from most McLeodganj properties.
What is the restaurant like?
The restaurant is on the top floor of the building with a view of the Dhauladhar range. It serves Indian and continental food and is open for breakfast and dinner. The terrace just below is a good place to sit in the afternoon or evening.
How do I book? I can’t find a Book Now button.
The Monal is not yet on our online booking system. Contact us directly on WhatsApp at +91 931 732 3395 with your dates and room preference — we’ll confirm availability and rates and take the booking directly. This also means you get to talk to someone who can answer any questions before you commit.
Are the rooms new?
The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and have private balconies — but they’re not recently renovated. They have character rather than contemporary finishes. If you’re after newer interiors, The Bougainvillea is our other McLeodganj property and has been recently updated.
Is The Monal good for families?
Yes — particularly for larger families. The Quadruple Room sleeps four in one room, and the Deluxe Family Suite (three interconnected rooms) sleeps up to six. Having parking, a restaurant on site, and spacious rooms makes family travel considerably easier.
What’s the difference between The Monal and The Bougainvillea?
The Bougainvillea is a newer, more boutique property — nine rooms, contemporary interiors, a terrace, walking distance from the Tsuglagkhang. The Monal is larger — twelve rooms, a rooftop restaurant, parking, spacious rooms with more of a traditional mountain hotel feel. The right choice depends on what matters to you.
